The Kansas Senate State Affairs Committee met on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, to vote on different bills, one being SCR 1607, making an application for a Convention of States to propose amendments to limit the federal government.
While discussing the bill, Senator Cindy Holscher (D) pushed back on the bill, stating that she was “obviously opposed” to the bill.
“We can’t dictate the rules of the convention,” Holscher said. “The convention delegates, as pointed out, will make their own rules. That raises concerns as far as proportional population and the impact a state like Kansas can have relative to population.”
After discussion on the bill, the committee voted 7-1 to pass SCR 1607 out of committee. It will now be going to the Senate to be voted on.
Regional Director for Convention of States David P. Schneider thanked everyone who wrote letters, made phone calls, and attended the hearing, and encouraged everyone to continue spreading the word.
“Time is critical over the next week,” Schneider wrote. “A vote in the Kansas House and Senate expected a week from today! Your voice is critical. Contact your legislators right now. He ended the email inviting supporters to Topeka on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, for the “Spring Clean the Swamp” Rally with former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum.
