Retired Psychologist Tom Bates will be joining The Kansas Constitutional, writing a bimonthly advice column. Readers will be able to send their questions to The Kansas Constitutional to receive advice from an experienced professional.
Bates received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1971 and a Master of Science in Psychology in 1973, both from Emporia State University. From 1973 to 1977, Bates worked as a Psychologist for Osawatomie State Hospital in Kansas where he did psychological evaluations and psychotherapy in the Adult Unit as a member of a multidisciplinary team. From 1977 to 1982 he became a Psychologist and Branch Manager for the Southeast Kansas Mental Health Center in Garnett, Kansas. There, he developed and provided comprehensive psychological services for a rural community mental health center in two branch offices of a six-county mental health center. Bates has also held various titles from 1982 thru 2012 at Bert Nash CMHC including Outpatient therapist, Acting Director of Adult Services, Senior Outpatient Therapist and Co-coordinator of Substance Abuse Services, Coordinator of Outpatient Services, and Team Leader for Adult Outpatient Services. He simultaneously provided psychotherapy for adults in a Private Practice in Kansas City, MO for 6 years1989-1995.
